Talk about the article discussing the albums and bands that helped start the melodic death metal genre here.

In my opinion it really is arguable who started the whole melodic death metal scene, and whether or not the bands in that scene can be classified as "death metal." As for myself, I will classify "At the Gates" and "Dark Tranquility' with having started true melodic death metal that hosts the Gothenburg sound, and I will do this because both the bands first full-length albums dropped into stores in the 1991-1992 range, whereas "In Flames" did no produce a full-length until about '93 or '94. I would also like to point out that "In Flames" is just plain melodic metal, their lyrics rarely if ever contain themes of death, the basis of their music is struggle and mysticism. On the flip side, however, "At the Gates" and "Dark Tranquility" do carry ominous tones of death in their music and lyrics. Though from a technical standpoint they all do write good music (i say this because I'm not an "In Flames" fan), the true founders of the Melodic Death Metal genre were "At the Gates" and "Dark Tranquility" respectively.
